Scarlett, known as Westbridge's ugliest girl, is secretly the sole heir of the Sinclair family. To protect her from the fate her beautiful mother suffered, she hides behind freckles and thick glasses while dating star quarterback Julian for three years. But Julian lets her take the bullying and kidnapping for Chloe—even stealing the film she made for her mother and destroying her mother's photos. Heartbroken, Scarlett breaks up with him, is abducted at the airport, and rescued by her adoptive brother Sebastian.

At graduation, she drops her disguise. Julian, learning of Chloe's lies, regrets everything and ultimately dies taking a knife for Scarlett. Scarlett chooses Sebastian, who always protected her, steps out of the shadows, and moves forward without hiding anymore.
