Nina spent nineteen years as the Whitakers' adopted daughter, and a complete ghost. Her straight-A report card got buried under newspapers. No one picked her up from the police station at 2 a. m. Her adoptive brother gave her the cold shoulder for six months after finding out she wasn't blood.

When her birth parents show up, she doesn't blink, walks out without taking a single piece of jewelry. Her adoptive brother swears she'll come crawling back. He tracks her to the town, and watches her real brother drop him in public while her birth parents shield her. She rolls up her sleeve, shows the scar on her wrist: I already died once. My new family brought me back.
