Cora Carter married the wealthiest man, Nathan Clark, through an arranged family marriage. However, Nathan mistakenly believed that three years ago, Cora had tried to set him on fire and thinks their marriage was merely a transaction. After an impulsive encounter, Cora became pregnant.

At this time, Nathan's first love, Joy Winters, returned, revealing the truth about the past. Yet, just as the truth came to light, the two were on the verge of separation.
