At nine years old, Liu Xie was placed on the dragon throne by a warlord’s hand. Dong Zhuo paraded him like a puppet, mocked him as a trembling hare, and laughed when he wet his robes in fear on the court floor. That was the mask. Behind it lived a mind colder and sharper than any sword. While Dong Zhuo celebrated his control, Liu Xie quietly pulled the strings. He orchestrated the fall of his tyrant through a dancer’s charm and a foster son’s blade. Dong Zhuo’s head rolled—but the boy emperor’s chains only tightened. Cao Cao took the warlord’s place. For twenty-five years, Liu Xie played the fool, feigning madness while secretly stitching together the threads of resistance.

He sent secret edicts, formed fragile alliances, and watched everyone he loved die—his agents executed, his empress slaughtered, his plans shattered one by one. Yet he never stopped. Even when Cao Pi finally threw him out of the palace, stripping his title and exiling him to obscurity, Liu Xie refused to surrender. From the ashes, a letter arrived from Zhuge Liang. With eight hundred villagers, he raised a banner, gathered heroes, and marched on Luoyang. The puppet became the king. The fool became the strategist. And when he reclaimed the throne at the ruins of his ancestral temple, he spoke the words he had held for decades: It is not heaven that saves the Han—it is us.
