The color of souls

I can see people’s soul colors: red for goodness, black for evil. Two families came to adopt at the orphanage. My best friend Mia begged me to give her the rich couple, tired of hardship.

I agreed, and they picked her the next day—yet their souls were pitch black. When I warned her, she pushed me down. I chose the poor couple instead; their disabled son couldn’t walk, but their souls shone warm red.
