Twenty‑three years ago, Katharina Ermine, the wife of Edmund Lynx, the eldest son of the richest family in Ling City, gave birth to a daughter in the delivery room. But the family patriarch, Old Mr. Lynx, had decreed that Katharina Ermine could only marry into the family if she bore a son.

So, at her mother’s instigation, Katharina Ermine swapped her own daughter for a baby boy (an orphan). To make it easier to recognize her daughter in the future, she branded the family crest of the Lynx clan onto the back of the girl’s shoulder.
