Summary notes

Orphaned Maddalena Harper becomes a copy scribe at Augustus Palace to fund her sick mother's treatment. Humiliated by court insider Adela with ink, she is instead taken in by Emperor Alexander. She stays by his side during a poisoning attempt, and a one-year contract makes her his companion.

She hides her talents while uncovering a smuggling plot, earning promotion to harbor superintendent and rising to empress. The return of the emperor's long-lost fiancée Katherine reveals hidden truths and her real rise begins.
