Lena Vale has spent sixteen years giving blood to her adoptive sister, Seraphina. At a Blood Moon charity ball, she catches Seraphina kissing her boyfriend—and finally refuses to sacrifice herself again. One drop of Lena's blood then awakens Alpha King Kael Thorne's cursed Mate Scar and restarts Vampire King Lucien Noctis's heart after 170 years. Hunted by wolves, vampires, and the secret Order of Dawn, Lena discovers she is a rare Veilborn whose blood has secretly powered artificial bonds, addictive stabilizers, and Seraphina's false miracles.

As Kael and Lucien uncover how their own bodies were manipulated, Lena refuses to become anyone's mate, consort, or weapon. Together, they expose Gideon Ashcroft's decades-long experiment and stop the Dawn Anchor from controlling both supernatural races. But when the ancient Veil Gate finally opens, Lena's supposedly dead mother returns—revealing that the Veil was never built to keep monsters out, but to keep something far older trapped inside.
